February 2024 - Boxelder Bugs
Introduction Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are fascinating insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, commonly known as “true bugs.” Their distinctive appearance, marked by vibrant red wing veins, dark coloration, and striking dark red eyes, makes them easily recognizable. These bugs are native to North America and are often found in abundance, particularly in regions where boxelder trees (Acer negundo) thrive, hence their name.
In addition to their striking appearance, boxelder bugs are relatively harmless to humans.
